Gloves for the apiary are not a strict necessity, but if you are a newer beekeeper—or just prefer not to take hits to the hands—it is highly advisable to invest in a solid pair.
Protection vs. Dexterity
Thick gloves will always hamper your dexterity to some degree during inspections, but they offer ultimate peace of mind. Many experienced beekeepers transition to thin nitrile gloves; while nitrile won’t stop a sting, it allows you to easily pinch and lift the glove away from your skin to pull the stinger out.
Personally, I prefer maximum protection. I wear thick cowhide gauntlet gloves. Yes, I have traded off some fine handling ability for this. For instance, when placing frames back into the standard brood box after a check, I frequently manage to trap my fingertip under the ear of the frame. Because the cowhide is thick, I then have to use my other hand to lift the frame and free my finger. (Pro tip: using a metal frame grip completely eliminates this issue).
Hygiene Matters
No matter what material you choose, always thoroughly clean your gloves between inspections. Leather can harbour bacteria, and keeping your gear clean prevents the spread of harmful diseases like European foulbrood between colonies.
